Mental Hygiene Board of Review

The Mental Hygiene Board of Review is composed of the President
of the Senate, or his alternate, the Speaker of the House of Dele-
gates, or his alternate, and nine persons appointed by the Governor for
a term of six years. Of these nine persons, two must be psychiatrists,
one a physician, not a psychiatrist, one a psychologist, one a psychi-
atric social worker and one an educator. It is the duty of the Board,
or committees thereof, to visit at least twice a year each of the State
operated mental institutions and to report to the Department of Men-
tal Hygiene the condition of such institutions together with any
recommendations deemed necessary by the Board (Acts of 1949,
Ch. 686).

MENTAL HOSPITALS
CROWNSVILLE STATE HOSPITAL

The Crownsville State Hospital was established by the General
Assembly in 1910 and was opened to patients in 1911. The hospital
provides care for mentally ill Negroes from all parts of the State.
The special school for mentally defective Negro students is also lo-
cated here. The number of patients in the hospital is 1880, including
228 patients in the Feebleminded Division.
