157. If any person shall attend and not perform the reason-
able labor required of him by the overseer according to his
ability, he shall incur the same penalty as if he had neglected
to attend.
158. If any master or overseer of any slave being notified
shall refuse or neglect to send such slave, he shall forfeit one
dollar for every slave so refused or neglected to be sent.
159. The supervisor shall compel every slave summoned and
sent to perform the labor required of him.
160. Each supervisor shall keep a list of the persons who,
being summoned to work upon the roads, shall refuse or neglect
to attend as required, or who, attending, shall refuse to work
thereon, and of every master who shall neglect or refuse to send
the slaves required to be sent, and shall, once in every six
months, call upon each of said persons liable to fines as afore-
said, and demand payment of the money forfeited, and on refusal
or neglect to pay the same, shall collect said fines before any
justice of the peace for said county.
161. The said supervisors shall severally account annually for
all fines and forfeitures received by them to the county commis-
sioners upon oath, and pay the amount thereof as the county
commissioners shall direct.
162. The county commissioners of said county shall annually
contract with some proper persons for repairing and keeping in
order the causeway commonly known by the name of Vienna
Causeway, and the wharf adjoining the same, the causeway on
the south side of Wicomico River at the lower ferry, and the
wharves at said ferry on each side thereof, and the causeway and
wharves at the upper ferry on Wicomico River on each side
thereof, and the causeway on the north side of Pocomoke River
at Stephen's Ferry.
163. If any person with whom the said county commissioners
shall contract for repairing the said causeways and wharves shall
not repair, the same agreeably to the terms of their contract
within a reasonable time after the same shall be out of repair, or
shall in any manner fail to comply with the terms of such-con-
tract, he shall forfeit the sum of twenty dollars for each neglect
