lashes, to be given to such offender, as the nature of the case
may require.

24. All sheriffs, bailiffs, constables, and other officers shall aid
and assist the said trustees, and the officers by them appointed,
in the discharge of their respective duties.

25. If any person shall be sued or prosecuted for any thing
done in pursuance and execution of this law, or any thing
therein contained, he may plead the general issue and give the
special matter in evidence in his defence; and if, upon trial, ver-
dict shall be found for the defendant, or the plaintiff be non-suit
or discontinue, the defendant shall recover treble costs, and if
the plaintiff is unable to pay the same, they shall be paid by the
attorney who brought the suit, unless the plaintiff shall give
security for the costs, to be approved by the court.

26. Each trustee of the alms-house shall be entitled to two
dollars a day for each day's attendance upon the duties of his
office.

CHARLOTTE HALL.

27. The judge of the Circuit Court for St. Mary's county shall
suppress any license for the retailing of ardent spirits at or
in the village of Charlotte Hall, or within two miles thereof,
in St. Mary's county, upon the recommendation of a majority
of the trustees of Charlotte Hall Academy, stating that they
believe the retailing of ardent spirits at such place to be injurious
to ft\e interests of said academy.

28. The clerk of the Circuit Court for St. Mary's county shall
not issue license to retail ardent spirits at any place, with-
in the limits prescribed in the preceding section, at which a
license to retail the same has been previously suppressed,
except upon the consent, in writing, of a majority of the trus-
tees of Charlotte Hall Academy, designating the place at which
and the person to whom such license may be granted.

CIRCUIT COURT.

29. The terms of the Circuit Court for St. Mary's county
shall be held at Leonard Town, on the third Monday of March
and on the third Monday of November in e.ach year.
