778 ST. MARY'S COUNTY. [ART.18.

exceeding three months, unless he shall find security, in any sum
not exceeding fifty dollars, in the discretion of the justice, for
his good behavior during the space of six months.

18. Upon complaint made, by. any trustee or the overseer, to
any justice of the peace, that any person in said alms-house hath
behavad himself in a disorderly manner, or hath refused or
neglected to perform his daily labor and task, or to obey, keep
and observe any of the rules and by-laws of said corporation the
aaid justice may order such moderate and proper correction, not
exceeding thirty-nine laahes, to be given to such offender, as the
nature of the case may require.

19. Any one of said trustees may, under his hand in writing,
direct the admission of any poor person into said alms-house.

20. Any justice of the peace for said county, or any one au-
thorized and appointed by said justice, may apprehend or cause
to be apprehended and commit to the said alms-house any rogues,
vagrants, vagabonds, beggars and other idle, dissolute and disor-
derly persons found loitering or residing in said county who follow
no trade or occupation, and have no visible means of subsistence,
there to be kept at hard labor for any term not exceeding three
months, and the said overseer lhall receive and employ them ac-
cording to the tenor of their commitment.

21. If any person shall sell or dispose of any strong liquor, or
other thing, to the inmates of said alms-house, he shall for every
offence forfeit and pay the sum of twenty-five dollars.

22. All forfeitures, pains and penalties inflicted and imposed
by this law, may be recovered in the Circuit Court for said
county, by an action of debt or by indictment, one-half to the
informer and the other half to the use of the said alms-house.

23. Upon complaint of the overseer of said alms-house to any
trustee of said alma-house that any rogue, vagrant, vagabond or
other idle, dissolute and disorderly person thereto committed and
therein remaining, hath behaved himself in a disorderly manner,
or hath neglected and'refused to perform his daily labor and
task, or neglected or refused to obey and keep any of the rules
and by-laws of said corporation, the said trustee may order and
direct such moderate punishment, not exceeding thirty-nine
