ROADS.
40. The supervisors of roads in said county shall work and
repair the roads in their several districts between the twentieth
day of April, and the thirtieth day of May, in each year.
41. They shall before they proceed to work on said roada give
at least ten days' notice, by advertisements set up in at least
three of the most public places in their district, of the time and
place they intend to commence work.
42. They shall in no case proceed to work upon the public
roads with less than ten or more than twenty hands on any one
day, without the directions of the county commissioners of said
county.
43. The county commissioners of Howard county shall allow
supervisors and persons working on the public roads of said
county, the following wages: for every supervisor, two dollars
per day; to a man, one dollar per day; to a woman, seventy-five
cents per day; for one yoke of oxen and cart, with driver, two
dollars and fifty cents per day; and for plough and two horses,
with ploughman, two dollars and fifty cents per day.
SCHOOLS.
44. The county commissioners of Howard county shall be
commissioners of primary schools for said county, and their clerk
shall, without any additional compensation, perform all such
duties in relation to primary schools as they shall require.
45. They shall be entitled to receive from the Treasurer of the
State the proportion of the school fund payable annually to
Howard county.
46*. The county commissioners of Howard county are hereby
authorized, empowered and directed to levy upon the taxable
property of said county the sum of seven thousand dollars an-
nually for the use of the primary schools of said county, which
said sum shall be equally divided amongst the school districts of
said county, excepting only the seventh district, which shall an-
nually receive three hundred dollars more than the other dis-
tricts respectively, so long as a male and female school shall be
kept and maintained in said seventh district, and-the aggregate
