same among the school districts of the county, in proportion to
the number of children between the ages of five and eighteen
years, living in such districts.

279. The free white male inhabitants of each school district,
who shall b'e qualified to vote therein for members of the Gene-
ral Assembly, shall annually elect three trustees of the primary
schools for the several districts.

280. The time and place of holding such elections shall be,
designated by the inspectors of primary schools, in the manner
directed by section 272 of this article.

281. The trustees shall hold their offices until the annual
election of trustees next succeeding, and all vacancies in said
office (unless filled by special election, directed by said trustees,
by giving ten days' notice thereof) shall be filled by the in-
spectors of primary schools.

282. Any person who shall be duly elected or appointed
trustee as aforesaid, who shall refuse to accept said office, shall
forfeit and pay the sum of five dollars, to be recovered in the
name of the inspectors of primary schools; or in the name of
any other person, before a justice of the peace of the county,
for the use of the said inspectors.

283._ Any person who shall be duly appointed or elected such
trustee, -who shall have accepted or failed to declare his refusal
to accept said office, and who shall neglect the performance of
the duties thereof, shall forfeit and pay the sum of ten dollars,
to be recovered and applied as aforesaid.

284. The said trustees shall and may hold any property
which may be vested in them, for the use and benefit of their
school; and such property, whether real or personal, shall be to
them and their successors in office, in the same manner as if
they were a body corporate.

286. They may erect school houses, or rent houses suitable
for the purpose, and keep the same in repair, purchase fuel and
stationery for the use of the same, and may permit any of said
school houses to be used for public worship.
