places where the roads lead, with the names of such places and
the distances thereto legibly inscribed thereon.

267. If any person shall wantonly deface, injure or pull down
any such index or finger board, he shall forfeit and pay a sum
not exceeding five dollars for each offence, to be recovered before
a justice of the peace in the same manner as small debts are
recoverable, one-half to the informer and the other half to the
use of the county.

SCHOOLS.

268. The county commissioners of Frederick county shall
annually, at their meeting in the month of May, appoint one
person from each election district of said county to constitute a
board of inspectors of primary schools in said county.

269. The persons so appointed shall, before they enter upon
the duties of said office, and within fifteen days from their ap-
pointment, take and subscribe before a justice of the peace of
the county the following oath: "I, ----, do swear that I will
in all things, to the best of my knowledge and ability, well and
truly execute the trust reposed in me as inspector of primary
schools for Frederick county, without favor or partiality."

270. The justice of the peace before whom such oath shall be
taken, shall, without fee or reward, certify the same under his
hand on the day when taken, and deliver the same to the person-
taking it, who shall within eight days thereafter deliver or trans-
mit the same to the clerk of the Circuit Court; and if any person
so appointed shall not take, subscribe, transmit or deliver the said
oath within the times aforesaid, he shall be deemed to have
refused said office.

271. If any person so appointed shall refuse to serve in said
office, or shall serve therein before he shall have taken and sub-
scribed such oath, he shall forfeit the sum of ten dollars, to be
recovered Ware any justice of the peace, one-half to the use of
the prim&^oehools of the county, and the other half to the person
who may prosecute said suit with effect. *

272. The aaid inspectors shall determine the time of holding
the annual election of trustees, and selection of sites Of school"
houses as hereinafter directed, and shall give notice thereof by
