532 DORCHESTER COUNTY. [ART. 10.

SCHOOLS.

185. The county commissioners of Dorchester county shall, at
their first meeting in each year, or as soon thereafter as may be
convenient, appoint five commissioners in each election district
of the county, whose duty it shall be to superintend the different
schools in said election districts and employ teachers for the
same, and dismiss them in their discretion; to draw semi-annu-
ally on the treasurer of the school fund of the county for the
sum of one hundred and twenty-five dollars, and pay the same to
each teacher employed by them, and to have the entire control
and management of the schools in their respective districts.

186. The school commissioners thus appointed may appoint
three or more auxiliaries for each school in the several districts,
for the purpose of superintending said schools.

187. The county commissioners shall notify the school com-
missioners of their appointment by advertisement to be inserted
in a newspaper or newspapers published in the town of Cam-
bridge once a week for three successive weeks.

' 188. A majority of the board of school commissioners in each
election district shall be a quorum for the transaction of business,
and the first named commissioner on the list shall act as president
of the board.

189. They shall meet at such times and places as they may
deem necessary.

190. Each commissioner, before he acts aa such, shall take an
oath before some justice of the peace of the county faithfully to
discharge the duties of his office.

191. They shall, when any school district is in want of a
school house, purchase a lot of ground therefor in the most con-
venient place for the purpose, regard being had to the con-
venience of the majority of pupils to be educated in the
district.

192. They shall, when they cannot obtain said land at fair
prices, condemn the aame according to law.
