refused and neglected to do and perform his daily labor and task,
or hath refused and neglected to obey and keep any of the rules and
by-laws of said corporation, the said trustee may direct such mode-
rate and proper correction, not exceeding twenty-five lashes for
any one offence, to be given to such offender as the nature of the
case may require.
19. Any justice of the peace of the county, and any one
authorized and appointed by such justice, may apprehend, or
cause to be apprehended, and commit to said alma-house, any
rogues, vagrants, vagabonds, beggars and other idle, dissolute
and disorderly persons found loitering or residing in the said
county who follow no labor or trade and have no visible means
of support, there to be kept at hard labor for any time not ex-
ceeding three months.
20. Any trustee of the poor or justice of the peace of the
county may, in writing under his hand, appoint what poor shall
be received into said alms-house.
21. If any person shall sell or dispose of any liquor, or any
other thing, to any inmate of said alms-house, he shall for every
such offence forfeit and pay the sum of twenty-five dollars.
22. If any person shall purchase any matter or thing what-
soever which shall belong to said alms-house from any of the poor
contained therein, he shall, upon conviction thereof, in the Cir-
cuit Court, forfeit and pay for every such offence the sum of
twenty dollars, to be applied to the use of the said trustees.
23. The county commissioners of Dorchester county, at the
time of making their annual levy, shall levy such sum of money
as the trustees of the poor, or a majority of them, deem neces-
sary for the support of the alms-house and out-pensioners, to be
paid to the trustees of the poor or their order, or the order of a
majority of them, under their common seal.
24. The said trustees shall apply the money so levied to and
for the use, benefit and charge of maintaining the poor, in pur-
chasing provisions and other necessaries for their use and labor,
for providing men and women servants, and purchasing ma-
terials for the use and employment of all poor who shall be able
to labor.
