and who shall serve for two years from the date of their appoint-
ment, and until their successors shall be appointed.

120. The trustees shall ascertain the number of white children
between the ages of five and twenty-one years in their respective
school districts, and annually report the same to the school com-
missioners.

121. They shall, in any district where there is no school house,
select some suitable and central site, secure the same by purchase,
gift or condemnation, and make arrangements for the erection
and furnishing of a school house thereon.

122. They shall exercise a supervisory control over the manage-
ment of the schools in their respective districts, by appointing
teachers, determining upon vacations, times for public examina-
tions, persons to conduct the same, and doing such other things
as they may deem necessary for the promotion of the best inte-
rests of the schools under their respective supervision.

123. They shall have power to discharge teachers for ineompe-
te"Bcy, neglect of duty, or immoral deportment, and also to dismiss
pupils for impracticable insubordination or gross immoral conduct.

124. They shall admit no child in any school who is under the
age of five years, or over the age of twenty-one, unless where, in
their judgment, this rule should be dispensed with.

125. They shall require the teachers in their respective schools
to keep a register of the names and ages of their pupils and their
daily attendance, and report the same to them at the end of each
scholastic year, which report they shall deliver to the board of
school commissioners.

126. They shall not employ as teacher any person, who shall
not furnish from the board of school commissioners a certificate
that he is a person of good moral character and capable of in-
structing thoroughly in the elementary branches of an English
education, which shall be the lowest standard of qualification of
teachers.

127. If they appoint any person as teacher who shall not fur-
nish such certificate, he shall not be entitled to any compensation
under this law.
