extent and in the same manner as if they were a body cor-
porate.

66. The following shall be the duties of the trustees of the
several school districts, to wit: They shall in the month of
August in each year, ascertain the number of children in their
respective districts entitled to receive a portion of the public
school fund, and report the same to the president of the board
of school commissioners of the county, and shall also report upon
oath, to said commissioners, the number of children in their re-
spective districts on the first Monday of March and September
in every year.

67. They shall report to their successors in office, within twenty
days after their qualification, the amount of money in their
hands for school purposes, and pay the same to them, and on
failure, the trustees in office shall sue for and collect the same as
other debts of like amount.

68. The said trustees shall not draw any money from the
school commissioners unless they actually owe the amount pro-
posed to be drawn for school purposes, nor for the purpose of
erecting school houses, until the said houses are in progress of
erection, and the money proposed to be drawn is due and owing
for said purpose.

69. They shall, if there be no school house in the district,
make the necessary arrangements for erecting and furnishing
one, and one-half of the portion of the school fund of the county
which the district may be entitled to for that year may be ex-
pended by them in building and furnishing the same.

70. They shall assemble annually, or oftener in case of a
yacancy, and elect one or more teachers for the schools within
their respective districts, but no one shall be eligible as
teacher unless he shall furnish a certificate from the board of
examiners, and if a teacher had previously been employed,
before he can be re-eligible, he shall have obtained from the
board of examiners .a renewal of his certificate; and if the
trustees shall at any time elect or keep in their schools any
teacher who has not obtained a certificate or a renewal of the
same, the school commissioners shall refuse any order for the
payment of such teacher, or of any other expense connected with
