with.

Said bill being upon a second reading,

Mr. Iglehart submitted the following amendment :

Section 1, strike out all after the word "Act," in the 3d
line.

Pending the consideration of which,
On motion of Mr. Iglehart,

The House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole
to consider the bill entitled an Act to add a new Article to
the Code of Public General Laws, to be entitled " Public
Education," providing a general system of Free Public
Schools for the State of Maryland, and to repeal all laws in-
consistent therewith, with pending amendments,

Mr. Brown in the chair.

After some time spent in Committee of the Whole,

The committee rose,

(The Speaker resumed the chair,) and through Mr. Brown,
Chairman, reported that they had had under consideration
the bill entitled an Act to add a new Article to the Code of
Public General Laws, to be entitled "Public Education,"
providing a general system of Free Public Schools for the
State of Maryland, and to repeal all laws inconsistent there-
with, with pending amendment,

Had made some progress thereon, and asked leave to sit
again.

The report was received, and leave granted.

John M. Carter, Esq., Secretary of State, delivered the
following message from His Excellency the Governor:

EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT,

Annapolis, March 7, 1868.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates:

I have this day signed and transmitted to the Clerk of the
Court of Appeals the following bills, received from your
Honorable Body on 5th and 7th instants :

An Act to repeal section 25 of Article 5 of the Code of
Public General Laws, entitled Appeals, and to re-enact the
same with amendments.

An Act to authorize and empower the Commissioners of
Allegany county to levy a sum of money to aid in the con-
struction of a bridge across the Potomac River, at Western-
port, in Allegany county.
