JOINT RESOLUTIONS :
WHEREAS, in every civilized land, its history has been
marked by sympathy for the oppressed, pity for the poor,
and commisseration for the suffering. Never has this been
more strikingly manifested than in the devotion, energy and
sacrifices that have characterized the operations of the " La-
dies' Southern Relief Association of Maryland," in minister-
ing to the wants and necessities of our brethren of the South.
Their contributions, gathered from all parts of our own and
other States, (not passing by the offerings of children,) have
fallen like the dew of heaven upon all, without respect to
sex, age or creed ; therefore,
Resolved, That the thanks and warmest commendations
of the General Assembly of Maryland are due, and are here-
by sincerely tendered to Mrs. Benjamin C. Howard, President
of the "Ladies' Southern Relief Association" of Maryland,
and all the ladies composing said Association, for the timely
aid afforded to the suffering in the Southern States, and for
the efforts still making in behalf of that portion of our
afflicted land.
Resolved, That a copy of the above preamble and resolu-
tion be appropriately engrossed, signed by the Speaker of
the House of Delegates, the President of the Senate, and the
Governor of Maryland, and by the Governor transmitted to
the President of the " Ladies' Southern Relief Association."
Which were read a first time.
