498 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS ("Feb. 25,

Howard county, praying the passage of an Act creating the
office of Treasurer for said county.

Which was read and referred to Messrs. Jones, Clark and
Poteet.

Mr. Holmes presented the remonstrance of J. A. Hamilton
and others, against the sale of the franchise of the Sweet Air
and Dulaney's Valley Turnpike Company.

Which was read and referred to the Baltimore county del-
egation.

Mr. Syester submitted the following order :

Ordered, That the use of this Hall be granted to Dr. C,
K. Nelson, on Wednesday evening next, 26th instant, for the
delivery of a public lecture.

Which was adopted.

Mr. Offutt submitted the following order :

Ordered by the House of Delegates, That the Attorney
General be, and he is hereby directed, fourthwith to inquire
into the rights, privileges and franchises of the Turnpike
Company, incorporated under the Act of 1817, chapter 97,
to construct a turnpike from Rockville in Montgomery-
county, to the line of the District of Columbia, and to take
such steps and institute such proceedings, as in his judgment
may seem best, to protect the citizens of Maryland against
exorbitant, and unlawful rates and tolls, imposed upon them
by directors and officers of the said road, continued from the
said line, and passing through the District of Columbia to
Washington city, and to require the said company to place
its road lying in the State of Maryland., in a traveling con-
dition, and proper State of repair as required under their
charter.

Which was adopted.

On motion of Mr. Markland,

Leave was granted to the Committee on Corporations to
report a bill to incorporate the Baltimore and North Point
Turnpike Company.

On motion of Mr. McElroy,

Leave was granted to the Committee on Pensions to intro-
duce a bill entitled an Act granting a pension to Mrs. Eliza-
beth Jenkins, widow of James Jenkins, who was a soldier in
the war of 1812.

On motion of Mr. McElroy,

Leave was granted to the Committee on the Judiciary to
