Which was read a first time.

Mr. Colton, chairman of the Committee on Claims, re-
ported favorably a bill entitled an Act appropriating the
sums of money therein mentioned to pay the claims of Plum-
mer & Usilton, Wm. H. Councell, K. E. Ewing, E. F. Per-
kins, N. H. Green, Dr. Montgomery Johns, Samuel L. Gei-
singer, John T. Watkins, Edwin M. Shipley, Samuel Smith
and Geo. W. Murdoch.

Which was read a first time.

Mr. Hubbard, chairman of the select committee on mile-
age, reported a bill fixing the mileage of members and offi-
cers of the General Assembly oi Maryland, with proposed
amendments.

Said bill being upon a second reading,

Mr. Pentland submitted the foliowing amendment:

Provided, That none of the within named sums shall ex-
ceed the sum of fifteen cents per mile.

Mr. Slingluff submitted the following amendment to the
amendment:

Amend by inserting half cent a mile, instead of "fifteen
cents," and that the members from Baltimore city pay one
cent per mile, for every mile traveled, into the Treasury.

Which was rejected.

The question then recurring upon the amendment sub-
mitted by Mr. Pentland,

It was rejected.

Mr. Smith, of Baltimore city, moved that the bill be re-
committed to the committee with instructions to report a
bill making the nearest post office to each member the point
from which to estimate the distance for fixing the mileage
instead of the county towns as now adopted.

Decided in the negative.

The hill as amended, was then read a second time and or-
dered to be engrossed for a third reading.

Mr. Slingluff (the rules being suspended,) presented the
petition of 150 citizens of Baltimore and Carroll counties,
praying for an Act authorizing the Commissioners of said
counties to build a bridge over the Patapsco Falls where the
lime kiln road crosses said Falls.

Which was read and referred to the Baltimore and Carroll
county delegations.

On motion of Mr. Hall,
