1868.] OF THE SENATE. 635 TUESDAY, March 24th, 1868. The Senate met pursuant to adjournment. Prayer by the Rev. Mr. Hammond. Present at roll call : Messrs. President, Browne, Biggs, Brewer, Clarke, Car- roll, Denson, Earle, Fields, Grove, Henkle, Hyland, Ham- mond, Kimmel, Lee, Maddox, Miller, Parker, of Calvert, Snyder, Smith, Walsh, Welch—22. Mr. Walsh proposed the following message be sent to the House of Delegates: BY THE SENATE, March 24, 1868. Gentlemen of the House of Delegates : We propose, with the concurrence of your Honorable Body, the appointment of ajoint committee, to be composed of two members of the Senate and three of the House of Delegates, whose duty it shall be to visit Baltimore on Thursday, 26th instant, for the purpose of representing the General Assem- bly of Maryland in the ceremonies attendant upon the recep- tion of the officers of the steamship Baltimore, the pioneer in the great enterprise of connecting, by means of a line of magnificent ocean steamers, our commercial emporium—the city of Baltimore—with Bremen, the chief commercial city of that powerful empire now known as the North German Confederation. This proposition is made through the belief that every in- terest of our State, agricultural, mechanical, and commer- cial, is to be benefitted by our cultivating the most intimate relations with Germany, both political and commercial, and that we should therefore avail ourselves of the present oppor- tunity, by extending this act of courtesy to the officers of the Baltimore, to evince the deep interest that we feel in pro- moting the most friendly and mutually advantageous inter- course between the people of Germany and the people of Maryland. Which was determined in the negative by yeas and nays as follows: AFFIRMATIVE. Messrs. Biggs, Miller, Clarke, Walsh—4. |
