Senate bill entitled an Act to authorize the Comptroller of the Treasury to adjust and settle the accounts due by Collec- tors, Sheriffs, Clerks, Registers and other receivers of the public moneys, in cases where the indebtedness accrued prior to the year 1866, Was read the second time, and ordered to be en- grossed for a third reading. At 12 M. the President announced that the hour had ar- rived to proceed to the election of a Senator to the United States Congress, agreeably to the provisions of the Act of Congress of the United States, entitled an Act to regulate the times and manner of holding elections for Senators in Congress, "approved the 25th day of July, A. D. 1866," and the Senate proceeded by a viva voce vote of each Senator present, to name one person for Senator in Congress from the State of Maryland to fill the vacancy created by the rejection of the Hon.
