144 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Jan. 24,

The Speaker laid before the House the resolution of the
Mayor and City Council of Baltimore, asking that the mode
of collecting the State taxes in Baltimore city may be
changed.

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Ways
and Means.

Mr. Slingluff presented the petition of sundry citizens
of Baltimore city and county against the repeal of the funer-
al law.

Which was read and referred to the Committee on the Ju-
diciary.

Mr. Hubbard submitted the following order :

Ordered, That leave of absence be granted to D. S. Moore
for one week, to attend to pressing business.

Which was adopted.

Mr. Harig submitted the following order :

Ordered, That leave of absence for three days, commencing
on Tuesday next, be granted to Messrs. Chaisty, Hammond
and Rose, to attend to business connected with this House.

Which was adopted.

Mr. Smith, of Baltimore city, submitted the following
ordaer :

Ordered, That leave of absence be granted James Deale,
a member of this House, until Wednesday morning next.

Which was adopted.

Mr. Iglehart submitted the following order :

Ordered, That the use of this Hall be granted the Rev.
Mr. Hammond, on Wednesday evening next, for the de-
livery of a lecture, (subject a day in Pompeii,) by James
C. Welling, Esq., President of St. John's College, for the
benefit of St. Anne's church.

Which was adopted.

Mr. Colton submitted the following order:

Ordered, That the Spe'aker be requested to appoint some
suitable person to assist the Hall-Keeper in washing the
spittoons and keeping the Hall in proper order, and that he
be allowed two dollars per day for such service.

Which was read.

Mr. Nicolai submitted the following substitute :
Ordered, That the Speaker be authorized to appoint an
Assistant Hall-Keeper.

Which was rejected.
