SCHOOLS.

AN ACT to extend the Powers of the Commissioners of the School Fund
in Queen Anne's County, and to encourage the establishment of Free
Schools in said County. — 1830, ch. 160.

SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the commissioners of the school fund for Queen Anne's
county be, and they are hereby authorized and directed, to
apportion and distribute equally amongst the several primary
school districts in said county, as they are now laid off and
divided, (except the Centreville district,) such sum or sums of
money as now are, or may be hereafter placed under their
direction by legislative enactment, or which they may from
time to time receive for interest or dividends on the funds
invested by them, and to pay the same semi-annually to the
trustees of the several school districts in said county, as is
herein after directed ; and the said commissioners are hereby
authorized and empowered, to alter or change any of the said
school districts, whenever in their judgment the interest and

convenience of the people shall require it ; Provided, that any
alteration or change which they shall make, or authorize to be
made, shall be set forth in writing, under their hands and
seals, and filed with the clerk of the county, to be recorded
by him according to law.

Proviso.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the commissioners of the
school fund aforesaid, be and they are hereby authorized and
directed, to appoint annually, in the month of March, three
trustees in each of the primary school districts in said county,
(except as herein before excepted,) who before they shall act
as such, shall swear, or affirm, as the case may be, before a
justice of the peace, that they will faithfully and diligently
discharge their duties as trustees for the district in which they
shall have been appointed, and shall deliver a certificate of
their qualification to the said commissioners, who shall there-
after pay to the said trustees, or to their order, in semi-annual
payments, the amount which they shall have assigned for the
use of the said district.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That whenever the resident in-
habitants in any of the districts aforesaid, shall raise, either by
a voluntary tax, contribution, or otherwise, a sum of money
which, added to the amount assigned and appropriated for the
use of the said district by the commissioners aforesaid, as will
establish a common free school therein, the trustees of the said
district shall be, and they are hereby empowered, to apply
the same to that purpose, otherwise they shall apply it to the
education of the indigent children in their district; and if
there be no school therein, they may have said children in-
