CONSTITUTIONAL REVISION STUDY DOCUMENTS

Members: 5, appointed by the governor. No salary. Necessary expenses.

Term: 5 years.

Removal: Governor may remove any Commission member for cause.

Employees: All merit. At present there are 9 employees.

Function: General supervision over matters pertaining to topographic, geo-
logic, hydrographic and geological surveys and resources.
Also, Bureau of Mines attached to this department.

Bureau of Mines

Established By: Md. Code Ann., art. 66C, §§17, 486-674.

Head: Director of the Bureau of Mines. Chairman of Mining Laws desig-
nated by the governor.

Members: Maryland Commission on Mining Laws. Three persons appointed
by the governor: one a representative of the mine operators, one
a representative of the mine employees, and one member must be
of the opposite political party of the then governor.

Term: Director of Bureau of Mines appointed by the governor from list
submitted by director of personnel. Members of the Commission
serve at the pleasure of the governor.

Removal: Director may be removed in accordance with merit system.
Employees: All merit. At present there are 6 employees.

Function: Supervising mining. Cooperates with United States Department
of Mines.

Maryland Commission on Mining Laws
Established By: Md. Code Ann., art. 66C, § 491.
Head: Chairman designated by the governor.

Members: 3, appointed by the governor, 1 representing mine operators, 1
representing mine employees and 1 representing the public.

Term: Serves at the pleasure of the governor.
Employees: None.

Function: To review and recommend necessary changes in mining laws, per-
sonnel, equipment, and safety.
