CONSTITUTIONAL REVISION STUDY DOCUMENTS

Term: 1 year.

Removal: No statutory provision.

Employees: Manager is appointed by the Board and is exempted at its request.
The assistant manager is also exempt at the Board's request under
Md. Code Ann., art. 64A, § 3. At present there are 34 merit and
3 unclassified employees.

Function: Board administers claim and judgment fund which is used to re-
imburse insured motorists for damage and injuries caused by un-
insured motorists. Insurers pay a percentage toward this fund for
its purposes.

Maryland Traffic Safety Commission

07.42.00.01

Established By: Md. Code Ann., art. 41, §§ 229-230.

Head: Chairman of Commission so designated by the governor from
membership.

Members: Not more than 18 (appointed by the governor).

Term: 6 years—staggered terms.

Removal: No statutory provision.

Employees: Part-time janitor unclassified. At present there are 7 merit and
1 unclassified employees. Commission members serve without com-
pensation.

Function: Promotes traffic safety on streets and highways of Maryland.

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Commission

Established By: State participation ratified by Chapter 613, Acts of 1959.

Head: Chairmanship rotates among participating units.

Members: Maryland and Virginia members appointed by the respective
governors; District of Columbia member appointed by the Com-
missioner of the District.

Term: To coincide with term of office in the agency from which he is
selected.

Removal: By appointing officer.
Employees: 10 employees.

Function: To regulate and plan for mass transit in the District of Columbia
metropolitan area. Has the power to prescribe fares, regulations
and practices of transportation companies and taxicabs in the area.
