APPENDIX

Members: Commissioner appointed by governor by and with the consent
and advice of the Senate. Md. Code Ann., art. 27, § 673.

Term: Indefinite.

Removal: Serves at the pleasure of the governor.

Employees: Correctional director appointed by commissioner for an indefinite
term at the pleasure of commissioner, Md. Code Ann., art. 27, § 679.
Industries director appointed by commissioner for an indefinite
time at the pleasure of commissioner. Md. Code Ann., art. 27, § 680.
Wardens and superintendents and assistants are appointed by the
commissioner for indefinite terms and serve at his pleasure. Md.
Code Ann., art, 27, § 682. Except for commissioner, correctional
director, industries director, warden, superintendent, assistant ward-
en and assistant superintendent, all officers and employees are under
the merit system. The warden of each institution is the appointing
officer for employees of that institution, and the commissioner is
the oppointing officer for all other employees of the Department.

Function: Operates Maryland's penal institutions.

Advisory Board of the Department of Correction
Established By: Md. Code Ann., art. 27, § 672.
Head: Chairman designated by governor.

Members: Chairman of Board of Parole and Probation, ex officio.

Term: 4 years—staggered.

Removal: Governor may for good cause remove any members. Md. Code
Ann., art. 27, § 672(a).

Function: Board studies penal system and makes suggestions to commis-
sioner of correction.

Head: Superintendent appointed by Commissioner. Md. Code Ann.,
art. 27, § 682.

Term: Indefinite.

Removal: At the pleasure of Board of Correction.
