Commissioners or mayor of Baltimore. Supervisors are re-
movable at any time by Department for incompetency or
other cause. Md. Code Ann., art. 81, § 233.

Assistants and supervisors—appointed by Department from
list of 3 submitted by supervisors after tests and interview.
Assistants hold office during good behavior and are subject to
removal by Department after hearing. Md. Code Ann., art.
81, § 237 (h) and (j).

Function: Supervises the administration of the assessment and tax laws
of Maryland. He also approves and records charters and
amendments to charters of domestic corporations.

Head: State auditor under supervision of comptroller.

Members: State auditor appointed by governor.

Term: 4 years.

Removal: Md. Code Ann., art. 19, § 33—for failure or neglect to per-

Governor may fill vacancy.

Employees: Md. Code Ann., art. 19, § 29. State auditors appoints dep-
uties and necessary assistants in accordance with merit sys-
tem—all employees are under supervision of comptroller.

Function: Annual post audit and submits reports of audit to comptroller.
