On motion of Mr. Bowie, it was

Ordered, That the Committee on Finance be instructed to
enquire and to report to the Senate, by bill or otherwise, at
an early day, the farthest extent to which the several State
taxes now levied may be abolished or reduced, without im-
pairing the ability of the State to meet its obligations.

On motion of Mr. Compton, it was

Ordered, That the Secretary furnish for the use of the Com-
mittee Room half dozen chairs.

On motion of Mr. Philpot, it was

Ordered, That a Committee be appointed to examine the
portraits of the early Governors of this State, (painted by
Peal.,) and to enquire where they are, and in whose posses-
sion at this time; and also, as regards the purchase of them
and the propriety of procuring them to be placed in the Ex-
ecutive Chamber.

The Chair then appointed Messrs. Philpot, Bowie and Vic-
kers.

On motion of Mr. Stephenson,

Leave was granted to Messrs. Stephenson, Young and Fra-
zier to report a bill to incorporate Blenheim Lodge No. 102,
of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, in Harford coun-

ty.

On motion of Mr. Davis, of Caroline,

Leave was granted to the Committee on Corporations to re-
port a bill to incorporate the (Eureka Base Ball Club,) at
Federalsburg, in Dorchester and Caroline counties.

On motion of Mr. Mules,

Leave was granted to the Committee on Judicial Proceed-
ings to introduce a bill to add an additional section to Ar-
ticle 4 of the Public Local Laws of the City of Baltimore, re-
lating to the collection of taxes.

On motion of Mr. Frazier,

Leave was granted to the Committee on Judicial Proceedings,
to report a bill to protect Churches and Church Property in
this State.

On motion of Mr. Frazier,

Leave was granted to the Committee on Judicial Proceed-
ings to report a bill to make valid a deed from James Mount-
gornery and Wife, to Wm. Rea, of Dorchester county.

Mr. Ohr, from the Select Committee, reported a bill enti-
tled an Act to repeal sub-sections 179 and 180, with section
