Mr. Brown.

1st Question. Did the armed men interfere with you?
Answer. They did not.

2nd Question. Did the armed men behave peaceably ?
Answer. They did, while I was there.

3rd Question, Did you see the armed men try to influence
the votes of any ?

Answer. I did not, the armed men made no use of their
guns.

4th Question. Why did you not register in 1865?

Answer. I did not apply, thinking the Registry law uncon-
stitutional and looked fqr its repeal. There were no charges
against me.

He-examined by Mr. Devecmon.

1st Question. Did you have any objection to the Registry
law itself?

Answer. No, I had not, but to the questions which they
propounded.

2nd Question. What was generally understood throughout
District No. 10, in regard to the armed force being at the
polls On election day ?

Answer. To keep the conservatives from voting.

3d Question. Did you see armed men at the polls?

Answer. I did.

Deposition No. 57.

JOHN ROTH, being, duly sworn, deposed and said as follows,
to wit: .

By Mr. Devecmon:

1st Question. What is your name, age, residence and oc-
cupation ?

Answer. My name is John Roth; age, 47; reside in Dis-
trict No. 10, Allegany county, Maryland; and am a farmer by
occupation.

2d Question. When did you register as a legal voter ?
Answer. I registered as a qualified voter in 1865, in Dis-
trict No. 10.

3d Question. Did you attend the election held in District
No. 10, Allegany county, Maryland, Novemer 6, 1866, did
you offer to vote; was your vote accepted or refused; and
