Answer. They merely replied that there were charges
against me.

By Mr. Devecmon :

8th Question. Do you know any other matter or thing
which would be of advantage to the contestants in this case ?
Answer. I think not.

Cross-examined by Mr. Brown.

1st Question;. State how those men were armed.
Answer. They were armed with guns and pistols.
2d Question. How many armed men did you see ?
Answer. Not less than twelve.

3rd. Question Is it not a custom for men to take their arms
with them to the polls ?

Answer. It used to be the custom.

4th Question. Is not nearly every man in that District in
the habit of using guns ?

Answer. Almost all.

5th Question, Do men there go to church with their guns ?

Answer. Not in my day.

6th Question. Did the Judges tell you what those charges
were ?

Answer. They did not.

7th Question. Durin.g the Rebellion did you furnish any
aid or comfort to the rebels, or express any sympathy ?

Answer. I furnished no aid or comfort in any way.
8th Question. Did the Judges ask you any questions?
Answer." They did not.

Re-examined lay Mr. Devecmon:

1st Question. Were these armed men at the polls for the
purpose of intimidating voters, and did their armed presence
intimidate them.

Answer. Their presence did intimidate voters.
