Which was adopted.
On motion of Mr. Neale,
Leave, was granted the Judiciary Committee to introduce
a bill entitled, an Act to change the name of W. H, C. Old
son to Harry Oldson Palmer.
On motion of Mr. Hall,
Leave was granted the Committee on Ways and Means to
introduce a bill to pay Richard C. Hardesty, of Anne Arun-
del county, adm'r. of George W. Sherwood, deceased, late
Clerk of the Circuit Court of Baltimore city, a sum of money
claimed to be due him for completing the records of laid
court.
On motion of Mr. Gorsuch,
Leave was granted the Committee on Corporations to re-
port a bill to incorporate the Maryland Slate Mining; Com-
pany.
Also, leave was granted the Committee on Claims to report
a bill to refund to Charles Mantz, of Frederick, certain tax-
es erroneously paid, in the year 1865.
The hour of twelve o'clock having arrived, in compliance
with the adjournment of yesterday, and in conformity with
the Act of Congress, chapter 245, entitled, an Act to regulate
the time and manner of holding elections for Senators in
Congress, the Senators of Maryland, appeared in the Hall
of the House, and the two bodies conjointly proceeded
to hold an election for Senator to succeed the Hon.
John A. J. Cresswell in the Congress of the United States.
The roll of Senators and members of the House of Dele-
gates being called, it appeared by a viva voce vote of each Sena-
tor and member, present, (a majority of all the members
elected to both Houses being present and voting,) that:
The Hon. Thomas Swann received 66 votes;
" " John A. J. Creswell 24 "
" " Alexander Erans, 6 "
" " . George Vickerg, 1 "
« " John W. Crisfield, 1 "
Whereupon it appearing that the Hon. Thomas Swann,
having received a majority of all the votes cast, (a majority
of all the members elected to both Houses being present and
voting,) the Chairman declared the Hon. Thomas Swann
duly elected Senator of the United States for the terra of six
years from the 4th day of March next.
Mr. Thomas, (the rules being suspended,) presented the
memorial of 102 citizens of Baltimore, protesting against the
repeal of the law of the last session of the Legislature re-
