Mr. Mules presented the memorial of John M. Smith, and
33 other citizens of Baltimore city, praying that no modification
or amendment may be made in the charter of the Baltimore
and Potomac Rail Road Company ;

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Inter-
nal Improvements.

Mr. Mules presented the petition of the Maryland Institute
for the promotion of the Mechanics' Arts, asking an appro-
priation to sustain the School of Design and other schools;

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Educa-
tion.

Mr. Maddox presented the petition of D. M. Tyler and 35
citizens of St. Mary's county, praying for a new wood law;

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Judicial
Proceedings.

Mr. Stephenson presented the memorial of 25 citizens of
Cecil county, against the erection of booms in the Susque-
hanna ;

Which was read and referred to the committee on that
subject.

Also, the memorial of 27 citizens of Cecil county, against
the erection of booms in the Susquehanna River;

Which was read and referred to the committee on that
subject.

Also, the memorial of 20 citizens of Cecil county, protesting
against the erection of booms in the Susquehanna River ;

Which was read and referred to the committee on that sub-
ject.

Mr. Earle presented two memorials in relation to the Oys-
ter trade of Baltimore city;

Which was read and referred to the Committe on the
Chesapeake and its Tributaries.

On motion by Mr. Philpot, it was

Ordered, That it be entered on the Journal of the Senate,
that Senator Holton, of Howard county, is absent from his
seat in consequence of sickness in his family.

On motion by Mr. Bowie,

Leave was granted the Committee on Finance to introduce
a bill to refund a sum of money erroneously paid into the
State Treasury, by William D. Bowie, Jr., in the year 1866,
on account of storage of tobacco.

On motion by Mr. Maddox,
Leave was granted to the Committee on Finance to intro-
