mission shall be the Maryland Commander of the American
Legion. The Governor shall designate the Chairman of the
Commission. ' '

Under this Act Governor Albert C. Ritchie appointed the
following Commission, April 14, 1920: Lieutenant Colonel
Stuart S. Janney, Baltimore County; George L. Radcliffe,
Baltimore; Van Lear Black, Baltimore; Captain Philip C.
McIntyre, Baltimore; Major Harvey B. Stone, Baltimore.

The Commission met and organized May 17, 1920. George
Radcliffe was made chairman and Karl Singewald was ap-
pointed secretary.

Tile Commission met and organized May 17, 1920, Lieut.-
Col. Stuart S. Janney was made chairman and Karl Singewald
was appointed secretary.

Since its organization the Commission has achieved note-
able and interesting results, and the files include a vast
amount of historical data both of general and individual
nature. Every phase of both military and civil activities is
receiving attention and the result will prove a most value-
able addition to the history of Maryland. It is the object of
the Commission to have recorded every individual who con-
tributed in any way to the great victory with his or her spe-
cial designation, and the work of gathering this detail is still
going on. Much of the data is gotten from newspapers, from
printed and written record and reports of organizations,
units, etc.. and a most comprehensive filing system has been
inaugurated. Not only are the records of the Marylanders
who went out directly from Maryland on file, but it is the
object of the Commission to include reports of the work of
former natives of this State. For instance, the general state
index approximates 4,200 officers, 600 nurses and 65,000 men,
while the War and Navy Department figures credit to Mary-
land about 61,000 men. The increased figures represent
former Marylanders who have enlisted from other states.

Files of a large number of newspapers published during
the war have been made, as well as files of various organiza-
tion publications, histories of units, companies, etc.; diaries,
rosters, photographs, maps, and camp and hospital papers,
and this collection is constantly being enlarged. Histories,
