The Tax Commissioner is appointed by the Governor, Comptroller
and Treasurer for a term of four years from date of his qualification,
(the present incumbent qualified on March 1st, 1898); all other officers
are appointed by the Tax Commissioner, and hold office during his
pleasure.
The Tax Commissioner is charged with the duty of valuing the
capital stock of corporations for the purpose of taxation. He also has
charge of the collection of taxes oil distilled spirits. Surety Com-
panies are required to report to the Tax Commissioner, and to obtain
from him a permit authorizing them to do business in this State.
