John H. Stewart, a witness produced on behalf of claim-
ant, being duly sworn answers 'to interrogatories mar feed
"J. M. D." ' ' '
To the first interrogatory:
A. Yes, sir.
2d:
A. They wanted to know what I knew touching Mr. Jones
loyalty; I said, I knew nothing; that I didn't recollect hav-
ing any thing politically with Mr. Jones during the war ;
that I went to hear Mr. Heaton one day that was net apart
by the civil authorities, and after Mr. Heaton's address Mr.
Jones offered a prayer, and it was as good a Union one as I
ever heard.
Cross-examination:
Are you personally acquainted with the officers of regis-
tration of this district ?
A. I am partially acquainted with two of them.
From your knowledge of the officers of registration of this dis-
trict, their integrity and standing in the community, will
you swear that they in "the discharge of their duties as such
officers disqualified any person except upon the evidence of
witnesses, the conduct; and answers of the applicant before
them, or facts, or declarations within their personal observa-
tion or hearing, which in the exercise of their judgment was
sufficient to exclude the applicant from registration as a
qualified voter, or that they did admit any person who was
not entitled to registration as a qualified voter.
(Claimant objects to this question and answer thereto.)
A. If they did any ac contrary to law I am not aware of
it.
What has been the general reputation of Mr. Jones for
loyalty or disloyalty in this community?
(Objected to by claimant and answer thereto.)
A. He has had the general reputation of disloyalty.
Re-direct :
1st. What act of disloyalty hava you ever heard Mr.
Jones had committed ?
A. I have heard that he rejoiced over the downfall of the
government, but I don't know any thing about it
