185 JANUARY 19TH, 1866. Met pursuant to adjournment, at Reholoth. HENRY PAGE, Cleric. James J. Moore, a witness produced on behalf of the Claimant, being duly sworn, answers and says: To the first interrogatory : A. Fifteen years the last time, been a voter 15 years, re- sided in 1865,in District No. 6. 2d. A. Did apply; took the oath; no witness; answered all the questions; when the list came out I was not on it; I appeared again on the review day, never having been notified of my charge to see what was the matter; I said to Mr. Conner, (the Register,) why I was not registered as a voter; he an- swered, public repute; I asked him what public repute was, he said it was what the public said of me; I told him I should like to have evidence, but he would bring none: gave no more satisfaction than that it was the public opinion; I then went out and brought a witness, Robert H. Milbourn, a re- gistered loyal man, but if appeared as if he was no use to me; while Milbourn was testifying, Mr. Isaac S. Lankford, a loyal voter, remarked what he had heard, Mr. Conner (Na- than Conner, not the Register,) say, and that was; he should like to see some of these Registers and say to them it we,s a pity that such a high toned man as James J. Moore, should be disfranchised; young Mr. Conner, (son of Nathan,) then remarked what he had heard of his father saying of me, and then he and Mr. Maddox, (one of the board,) both spoke in my behalf; they still paused, and as the time was approach- ing for them to close, I insisted upon my case being tested and finally remarked, that as to the nomination which had been made that did. not suit me, and I was not certain I should vote either way, but I should like to have the privi- lege of voting; they then gave me to understand that they would register me as a loyal voter; when I went to the elec- tion I found my name was on the list which was handed to 19 |
