the Judges; and I voted; but when I looked on the books of
Registration I found I was entered disloyal, by public re-
pute.

Cross-examination:
Q. Will you from your own personal knowledge, swear
that the officers of Registration in the discharge of their
official duties, did act contrary to the constitution and laws
of Maryland, or that they registered any person whom they
had reason to believe was a loyal man, as a voter, or that they
disqualified any person except upon the evidence of witnesses,
conduct, and answers of the applicant, or facts and declara-
tions within their personal observation or hearing, which,
in the exercise of their judgment was sufficient to disqual-
ify them? (Claimant objects to this question.)
A. I don't know what the law is, and therefore 1 don't
know whether they acted according to law or not; I thought
I had come up to the requirements of the law, but my name
was not put in the 8th column.
The above has been read to me and is correct.

John S. Lankford, a witness produced on behalf of claim-
ant, being duly sworn, answers and says, to special interrog-
atories filed this day.
To the first interrogatory:
A. 37 years; been a voter 16 years; resided in 1865 in
district No. 8.
2nd.
A. I did apply; took the oath; no charge; no witnesses.;
the Registers asked me only three questions, which I answer-
ed, and they then said they had done with me; the first
question was, "If I voted for Daniel M. Henry?" I answer-
ed "I did not;" his second question was, "If I ever rejoiced
at any Southern victory?" I said, "I rejoice at the death of
no man;" the third was, "if I ever sympathized with the
