169 Thomas J. Handy, a witness produced on behalf of claim- ant being duly sworn, answers and says: To the first interrogatory: A. 24 years; been a voter 3 years; resided in District No. 14 in 1865. 2d: A. Did apply among their first sittings; trok the oat'i and. answered all their questions; when the list came out, I found I was not among the qualified voters; I went before them again, I demanded the charge they had against me; they said it was a "general reputation for disloyalty." I then said that I defied them to get three men in the neighborhood to say that I was disloyal; and I asked them who it was that so reportedme; they said general repute. I then said, "if l get three or bur qualiced voters to come up here and testify to my loyalty," would that do? They said it would have some weight. They left the impression on my mind that it would be of no use. They then asked me who I voted for at the last election. I said I voted the Democratic ticket. They named over some men on that ticket, and said, whoever voted for them were disloyal. I then asked, "have you got no more registered who voted that ticket." They said, "No, not if we know it." 3d: A. Did not vote; would have voted for Franklin; I went up to vote, but not being registered, could not. Cross-examination: To the first interrogntory: A, Don't recollect; not that I know of. 2d: A. I did not; I don't think. 3d: A. Don't recollect of it; I might or might not. 4th: A. 1 decline to answer. 5th: A. I decline to answer. 6th: 17 |
