168 Did apply; took the oath, and answered all questions asked me without remorse of conscience; this question probably I don't answer satisfactorily, viz: which would I prefer, the South subjugated, and slavery abolished or the South to bo recognized and slavery exist, to which I answered I have never considered that question so as to answer it, but if you will give me some time I will answer it, I told them that I was a union man, opposed to the right of secession, and that I had always been so, but was opposed to the abolition of slavery; I thought I would be registered as a voter, until I saw the published list and my name was not there, I after- wards heard that some man had gone before the Registers and had said there was no doubt but that I had done disloyal acts, I asked one of the Registers if he would have that man sworn, that if he would swear that I had committed disloyal acts I would say no more, that my oath would be against his and they (the Registers) could take which they pleased, the Register said he would see that man and ask him if he would swear to it and if he would, he would notify me so that I could be present, but he failed to notify me who the man was, and. whether he had, them sworn or not; on the two last days for review I went before them and all I could find out was that I was disloyal by "public repute," I wanted to know who " public repute " was but they would not tell me, they told me that it was necessary for me to prove myself loyal, I told them I should ask no man to testify for me, that I had sworn to it and I thought that sufficient. 3d. A. Did not vote, I offered it but it was refused because I was not registered; would have voted for Franklin. 4th. Waived. Cross-Examination. 1st, 2d, 3d, waived. 4th. A. I have, 5th. A. I have, of course if I have been in favor of the govern- ment, I have regretted when the Federal army was defeated. The above has been read to me and is correct. WM. S. LANKFORD, Written and attested to by Henry Page, Clerk. |
