Wright, a witness produced on behalf of claimant, being duly sworn, answers and says, to the "Bar- ren Creek" interrogatories: To the first interrogatory: A. Lived here 43 years and been a voter 21. 2d: A. Did apply; Mr. Phillips, one of tile Registers, told me when I applied, that lie would administer the oath if I would swear to answer all the questions he would put to me. I told him I would answer part of the questions, but I would not answer all the questions put to me by apolitical convention; I was willing to take the constitutional oath; I was willing to take the oath prescribed tor the Registers to administer, and which they were administering; they refused to admin- ister the oath to me. 3d: A. Did not vote; would have voted for Franklin. Special interrogatory: Had you or not any conversation with the Registers, touch- ing any charge against you of any kind, and what they in- tended to do? if yea, state it. A. I had with Mr. Phillips, one of the Registers; lie said he intended on cutting the Democratic power. He had no other charge against me; this was not said-to me in the room, but in private, but' .while lie was Register. Cross-examination: Were you willing to take that part of the oath requiring0' you to answer all the questions put to you by the Officers of Registration? |
