4th and 5th. Waived.
The above has been read to me and is correct.
H. NELSON CRAWFORD.
Attested to and written by Henry Page, Clerk.
William.J. Humphreys, a witness- produce'! on behalf of
claimant, being duly sworn, answers and says:
1st.
A. 34 years; been a voter; 13 years, have been a voter ;
resided in 1865 in the 9th district.
2nd.
A. I did apply; was notified of no charge; confronted
with no witness; did not take the oath because, on the first
time I was afraid of being sent to the penitentiary, because
the Registers said that, if any witness should come forward
after I had taken the oath, no matter how inferior his char-
acter was, and testify that I had said or alone anything since
1861, it would be enough to send me to the penitentiary;
their Mr. Desharoon one of the oficers of registration, said
that the should appear before the Grand Jury, and should do
all he could to send people to the penitentiary; I told him
then to take my case in hand for a week and enquire into
my disloyalty; I then went the second time, and it was
about as it vvas the first time; then I went the third time,
and He told me no, I was too late; and then I asked him to
please tell me what I had done that was disloyal, that I had
a witness that would testify to my loyalty, which was Mr.
Alex. Wolson; then Mr. Purnell Johnston, one of the
Registers, said I had done enough, and; accused me of tell-
ing Mr George Parsons that Mr Connely and Mr. Coiling
had been shooting squirrels on his land, and that was all I
could get him to tell me of my disloyalty to my Govern-
ment.
3rd.
A. Did not vote .. would have voted for Franklin.
