138 The above has been read to me and is correct. SAMUEL Q. PARKER. Attested to and written by H. Page, (Clerk. Charles F. Dashiell, a witness produced on behalf of the Claimant, being duly sworn, answers and says: To the first interrogatory : A. Thirty-five years; a voter fourteen years,.I had been a voter at. the last election; resided in 1865 in the 9th election district, (Salsbury.) 2d. Did apply, was not confronted by any witness, notified or no charge; took the oath and answered all the questions; the firest day I went before them, had a hearing and they said that was sufficient; I then left the room, in a half hour afterwards was summoned to appear before them, which I did; I asked them to state what they wanted with me they said it was necessary for me to get two witnesses to testify to my, loyalty; I told them I would do it, I then saw Dr. Smith and Mr. George A. Downing, and asked them if they would not certify to my loyalty, they both said they would; they were both registered, men; the judges then told me I should meet them on the next meeting day, I did so, Dr. Smith with me, he did not swear but affirmed that he had always Iooked upun me a loyal union man; he had never known me to he guilty of a disloyal act; the judges then remarked, that.will do ;" I then left the office, supposing I would be registered; in a few days afterwards I was surprised, in look- ing over the published list of qualified voters to find my name was missing, I then met Mr. Jacob White, one of the Regis- ters, on the street and asked him why my name was not on that list, he told me that there had been a charge preferred against me, which was that on the 22d of November, 1863, I bad remarked while Capt. Joseph Bush, constable was be- ing marched through the street, between a file of negro soldiers, that if that was Unionism, putting the negro over the white man that I was not one of that stripe; that is the |
