rumored against me, and told by certain persons; I wanted
those persons summoned.
3d.
A. Didn't vote because I was not a registered-voter; I
asked the judges if they would take my vote, but they de-
clined; would have voted for Franklin.
4th. Waived.
Special interrogatory. State what you said to the registers
respecting any rumor to your prejudice as a loyal man, and
all that occurred at the time of your application for registra-
tion, and whether you applied to them more than once?
A. After answering all their questions, as I supposed sat-
isfactorily, I called their attention to a rumor that I had
given Thomas Humphreys of F., a dollar to go to Virginia,
who then explained that the dollar I gave him was for wages
due him from me, and that I didn't know he was going to
Virginia, and requested them to summon Thomas Humphreys
to testify concerning the matter, which they would not do;
I went before the board several times to see if they had any
charge against me; they never told me of any charge, and I
didn't know there was any against me. i.
Cross-interrogatories:, '
1st.
A. I don't think I did to any person.
2d.
A. I don't think I did to any person; only in general
terms that I was sorry for the war.
3d.
A. Don't remember that I did.
4th.
A. I did, at the last; at the end of the war.
5th.
A. In general terms, I was sorry that men were killed in
either army.
6th. Have your sympathies or not throughout the war
been with those who were in armed rebellion against the
Government ?
A. If you mean sympathies for their success in dividing
the Government, I have not; I have never seen the time yet
that I have ever wished the country divided; always been
opposed to it,
