114 Then he asked me if I had been in any of the States in re- bellion since the war? Said I had not. Then, if I had sent . or 'received any communications iron; or to the State; in re- bellion? Said I had not. He then said he had done with me I didn't know but what I was a registered voter until I saw the published list. 3rd. A. Did not vote because I was no. registered; I did not go to the election at all; would have voted for Mr. Franklin. 4th. Waived. Cross-Examination : ' st. A. Of course I was; I knew that a great many of our best generals. in both armies were being killed. ! A'.. Of course, I did; because I knew when it fell we were going to have a war, which I didn' t want—at least I thought so. 3rd. A. Don't remember of expressing myself about that bat- tle 4th. A.. I have; I was glad to hear of the downfall of Rich- mond; I knew it was the end of the war. 5th. A. Or course, I was sorry at hearing of our Government forces being defeated, because I was tired or furnishing a substitute every three months. 6th. \.
