5th, Were you present at any time while the officers of
registration were in session and acting as such?
A. I was not.
Re-direct examination:
1st. State why you did not apply for registration to the
officers of the tenth election district?
A. Because I was told by one of the officers of registra-
tion John S. Wilson, that it was of no use" for me to apply.
(Contestant objects to this answer as hearsay)
2d. Did he state why it was of no use ?
A. He stated that I was disloyal and that Samuel Dashiel
and George Dashiell had told him that they were ready to
appear to testify against me, and swear that I had offered
them money to purchased goods to send South.He then said
'its no use tor you to apply, Dr. and Wiilia A. D. Bounds,
Edgar Jones, Dr. James Stone, you can't come to T," and
then remarked to Capt. Peter Williams, "nor you either
Captain Peter," and he denies moat posisitively that he ever
thought or said such a thing.
(Contestant objects to this answer as hearsay.)

A. My loyalty is in my own keeping and I do not recog-
nize the right of any one to question me concerning it, except

6th. Have not your sympathies throughout the war been
with those who were in rebellion against the government.
