A. He said he was in favor of recognizing the Southern
Confederacy, and that was enough for me.
54th. Did he or not say he would vote for the recognition
of the Southern Confederacy rather than have war, if the
thing could not be settled otherwise?
A. I don't recollect any such observation. "Written ques-
tions were handed to Mr. Henry to answer. He said he
would not vote one man or one dollar. To the question,
" Will you vote for the recognition of the Southern Confed-
eracy?" the answer he made was, "I will." I don't recol-
lect of any qualification.
55th. What was proved against Wm Dryden?
A. Mr. Dryden refused to answer question on oath.
56th. Did he take the oath?
A. He did.
57th. Did he assign any reason?
A. I don't recollect his whole language. He flew into a
passion and said a great deal, refusing to answer the ques-
tion, and we could not get at whether he was loyal or not.
58th. What question did he refuse to answer?
A. I don't recollect.
59th. In the discharge of your duty did you consider a
man bound to answer all questions which you chose to pro-
pound to him?
A. Only such questions as touching his right to registra-'
tion.
60th. Did you ask this question of the applicants: "Have
you ever sympathized with the South?"
A. I do not recollect of having asked that question of a
stogie individual.
61st. What was the usual form in which you put the ques-
tion intended to ascertain the applicant's sympathies?
A. I know of no usual form. "Have you rejoiced at
the victories of the South?" " Whicli did you desire should
gain the victory?" &c., &c.
62d. Do you remember the cause of disqualification of
William E.'Fleming?
A. I don't recollect, more than general disloyalty.
63d. Do you remember what testimony W. T. Marrines
gave in the case of John E. Hay ward.
A. I cannot say that I do.
64th. Do you remember the admission of Henry T. John-
