17 44th. Was there any other witness against Mr. Polk? A. No sir. 45 th. What did the party whom you have spoken of as the Secession party call themselves ? A. I don't know what they called themselves, they chang- ed their names so often. I have heard members of the parly call themselves "Secessionists" and the party "Secession par- ty," "the Peace party, the Southern Rights, the State Rights party," and various other names. 46th. I see Win. T. Marriner's name entered as a witness against John Parsons; was he sworn, and what did he testify to ? A. He was sworn, I don't now recollect what Ills testimo- ny was. 47th. When you have entered on the books of Registration not sworn, do you mean that the party did not apply for Registration ? A. I mean this, they came up and asked to see the oath, and they would say they could not take that oath. 48th. Was it always the case that such persons appeared? A. It was frequently the case. 49th. In such case they did not apply to take the oath ? A. They said they wanted their name registered in some form, they could not take the oath. 50th. Who was the witness against Win. N. Bosten, and what did he testify. A. Mr. Wm. T. Marriner, I can't possibly recollect now what was his testimony. 51st, In your judgment, was, or not a disapproval of the war, a desire for settlement otherwise than by arms, and an opinion that the Government had no power under the Consti- tution to carry on the war, a sufficient cause of disqualifica- tion ? A. I did not think so. 52d. Did you .not disqualify anybody for opposing the Government in that matter and regard, for voting for Daniel M. Henry? A. I did not look on it in that light. 53d. Did not D. M. Henry profess to be opposed to the war and the supply of means for its conduct, because he thought that under the Constitution the Government had no right to coerce the South by force of arms, and that it was a violation of the Constitution so to attempt? |
