about this State-, and seeing an advertisement in the Adver-
tiser that you had pamphlets for that purpose, I have sent
you their address, wishing you would forward it to them.
Very respectfully yours,
S. T. FULLER, Asst. Eng.
ROCHESTER, N. Y., June 1, 1865.
W. R. COLE, Esq.,
Dear Sir:—I received the pamphlet on Maryland, which
you kindly sent to me.
Parties interested in the subject and contemplating re-
moving to some more Southern State, have made inquiries of
me respecting Maryland, and one or two have requested me
to obtain a copy of the pamphlet for them.
If you will send me two or three copies! I will hand them
to parties interested in the subject, and seeking informa-
tion.
Respectfully vours,
SEYMOUR G. WILCOX.
SING SING, May 16, 1865.
W. R. COLE, ESQ.
Dear Sir,—Seeing in the N. Y. Tribune that by applica-
tion to you a paper or book, setting forth the advantages of
emigration to Maryland, and knowing many who are casting
about in their minds, for an eligible place for homes, 1 write
you for the purpose of obtaining one of said books. I know
of quite a number of my neighbors—men of small means.
but men of sound integrity and industrious habits—most of
them mechanics—who talk strong of moving South, but they
.seem afraid of that wicked prejudice heretofore existing'in
the Southern mind against Northern people. For my own
part, I have no fear on that head myself, and mean as soon
as possible, to endeavor to get me a home in the Sunny
South—a thing I long ago should have done—but for that
dark shadow that so long cast a gloom, over both North and
gonth. I am a mechanic (Shoemaker.) I wish to obtain a
small farm, if possible not too far from some thriving vil-
lage—where I can devote part of my time to farming, and
part to working at my trade. If you know of such a situation
and it will not be too much trouble to you, I will be thank-
ful if you will let me know it. At any rate please send me one
at least of your books, and if you wish I will distribute some
of them for you.
Yours, &c.,
J. M. BROWN.
