tism, and being, by age and infirmity, rendered unable to procure the
necessaries of life, prays an act
may pass to provide for his future maintenance out of the poor's house;
and the facts stated in said
petition appearing to be true, therefore,
II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the justices
of Anne-Arundel county
shall be and they are hereby directed and empowered, at their levy
court annually so long as they
shall see cause, to assess and levy on the assessable property of said
county a sum of money, not ex-
ceeding forty dollars, for the support and maintenance of the said
Andrew Criswell, and that the
same be collected and paid annually by the collector of Anne-Arundel
county to such person as the
levy court of said county shall or may direct.
CHAP. XXXIX.
An ACT respecting the poor-house of Baltimore county. Lib.

BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That from and after
the passing of this act,
the trustees for the poor of Baltimore county, or the major part of
them, shall have full power
and authority to agree, and they are hereby empowered to pay to the
overseer of the alms and
work-house of said county, as a salary, a sum not exceeding five hundred
dollars per annum, and so
pro rato during his continuance in office, the said salary to be in
full for all services by him to be per-
formed.
II. AND BE IT ENACTED, That an act of assembly, passed at November session,
seventeen hundred
and ninety-seven, * entitled, An act respecting the poor-house of Baltimore
county, be and the same
is hereby repealed.
III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That this act shall continue and be in force
until the thirtieth day of
October, eighteen hundred and one, and until the end of the next session
of assembly which shall
happen thereafter.

An ACT for the relief of James Brown and William Thompson,
of Charles county, Frederick Koones, of Prince-George's coun-
ty, and John Kelly, of Montgomery county.

WHEREAS James Brown and William Thompson, of Charles county, Frederick
Koones, of
Prince-George's county, and John Kelly, of Montgomery county, by their
petitions to this
general assembly have set forth, that from sundry misfortunes they
are rendered unable to pay their
debts; that they are now confined in gaol, where they must remain without
any benefit to their cre-
ditors, while their large families are left helpless and destitute,
and exposed to all the horrors and
misery of want: And whereas the said James Brown, William Thompson,
Frederick Koones and
John Kelly, have stated, that from ignorance of the law they have not
taken the oaths of naturaliza-
tion necessary to make them citizens of the United States, although
they have resided in this state
from ten to fifteen years, and have taken the oaths of allegiance thereto,
and praying this general
assembly to take the special circumstances of their case into consideration,
and grant them relief in
the premises; which being thought reasonable, therefore,
II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the chancellor
shall be and he is
hereby authorised, on the application of the said James Brown, William
Thompson, Frederick
Koones and John Kelly, or either of them, by petition in writing, to
be released from their debts,
to extend to them the said James Brown, William Thompson, Frederick
Koones and John Kelly, all
the provisions of the act of assembly passed at the last session, entitled,
An act for the relief of sundry
insolvent debtors, on the said James Brown, William Thompson, Frederick
Koones and John Kelly,
satisfying the chancellor that they have fully complied with the condition
and terms of said act;
provided, that it shall not be necessary for the said James Brown,
William Thompson, Frederick
Koones and John Kelly, to make it appear to the chancellor that they
have been naturalized accord-
ing to the law of the United States, any thing in said act to the contrary
notwithstanding.
