LAWS OF MARYLAND.

by a majority vote of its stock, to acquire by consolidation,
merger, lease, purchase or otherwise, the assets, franchises,
rights and properties of eve^ kind of any railroad or railway
company or companies, existing or operating, in whole or in
part, in the District of Columbia, or in the State of Virginia,
connecting, or with which it may desire to connect its lines,
or those of any company or companies which may be pur-
chased by it under the powers hereby conferred, including
any extension thereof, as hereinafter provided, or upon a like
authorization by a majority vote of its stock to lease or sell,
and convey its assets, rights, franchises and property to any
of the companies above named for the purposes of such con-
solidation.

Power to
extend its
lines, build
stations, etc.

SEC. 4. And be it further enacted, That the said the
Washington and Rockville Railway Company of Montgomery
County, or such other purchasing and consolidating company,
under its present or any future name, shall have power to
extend its present lines, or any which may hereafter be
acquired by it under the powers hereinbefore granted, in any
direction, for a distance not to exceed seventy-five miles from
the present termini of said lines, and operate any such exten-
sion or extensions, as well as the said original lines, by the
use of electricity, liquids or gases in any form, cable or any
motive power whatsoever; to construct all such stations,
houses, buildings, bridges and structures of whatsoever
nature necessary or appropriate for the said purpose, and
to transport passengers, freight, express matter and United
States mail, and to collect fares and tolls for same over the
said original lines or extensions thereof; and in the event
that the said company shall not be able to come to an agree-
ment with the owner or owners of any lands through or. adja-
cent to which the said extensions or any of them may be
located or pass, then with further power to institute proceed-
ings under the provisions of Article 23, of the Code of Public

Condemnation
of lands
required, etc.

General Laws of this State, title "Corporations," sub-title
"Railroad Companies," for the condemnation of such lands as
may be required for rights of way, pole, conduit and pipe
lines for any useful purposes whatsoever connected with or
necessary in the discretion of the board of directors of said
company to the exercise of the powers and franchises hereby
granted, and also for its yards, markets, stations, bridges, ferry-
slips and structures, power-houses, transmitter and switch
buildings, and for such other structures and works as it may
require for the construction, maintenance and convenient
operation of its power plants, lines, route or routes, extensions
