1900.] OF THE SENATE 741

institution is to give these boys (in the absense of proper
parental training) such care and training as will well in-
spire an ambition to make them become good citizens,
and an honor to themselves and their families.

Saint Mary's Industrial School.
Too much cannot be said in praise of this institution
as carried on at present by the Xaverian Brothers in
charge. The 487 boys now in their charge are as com-
fortable and as happy as can be, as all appearance of a
reformatory seems to he removed out of their sight and
mind. Every attention is given to the moral training of
those children committed to their care.
The appropriation asked for is recommended by your
committee as it is needed for additional buildings, need-
ed for workshops and for the maintenance of the boys.

The Maryland &hool for Blind.
This institution was visited by the committee and are
pleased to report that this school and buildings are in
excellent condition, and found the children and patients
cheerful and contented. This institution gives employ-
ment to the hands, as well as to the mind, enabling them
to make a living, independent of the help given them by
the institution. The committee with great pleasure can
bear testimony to the great good which this school is
performing, and approve of the appropriation asked for.

Maryland Institute.
This institute was found by your committee to be still
performing the good work which has been in progress
for many years. They have had about 900 students dur-
ing the past year. Many of them young men and boys
who are obliged to work during the day, and night time
they attend this school, which takes many of them in free
of charge.
The appropriation which they ask is $7,000, and which
your committe considers advisable to grant.

Springfield Asylum.
The committee next visited the Springfield Asylum
