1900.] OF THE SENATE. 739

We find that they are very much in need of an operat-
ing room and. other necessary improvements. The cost
of which will be about $4,000

The entire amount asked for is $15,000 which is
needed for the following purposes, viz; $8,000 to take
up the mortgage; $3,000 to liquidate the floating debt;
$4,000 for the operating room.

Your Committee cheerfully recommend the amount
asked for.

&. Agnes Hospital.
Your committee next visited St. Agnes Hospital, and
we have no hesitancy in saying that we think it cannot
be surpassed in the country as a sanitarium. We find in
this hospital there is a great and good work carried on.
It also supports a free dispensary for the poor of the
surrounding country. They ask an appropriation of
$7,000 so that they may be able to accommodate 20 addi-
tional patients from the State.

We have no hesitancy in recommending this appropri-
ation, as we find that everything is done to make this
establishment a model of order and comfort for its in-
mates.

German Orphan Asylum.
Your committee next visited the German Orphan Asy-
lum, and too much praise cannot be given to the mana-
gers of this institution for the very efficient management
of the affairs of the Asylum. The committee in charge
take particular care to look after the comfort and safety
of the children. They have erected a fire escape so as to
prevent any accident in case of fire, and drills for that
purpose are regularly performed. The number of chil-
dren in their charge is 150. We recommend the appro-
priation which they ask, as we consider it money well
spent.

&. Elizabeth's Home for Colored Children.
This institution was visited by request of one of our
committee, and while it is customary to notify the insti-
tution of the time we would call, yet this one was not
so notified, and we were gratified to find tine home in
