1900.] OF THE SENATE. 297
Mr. Shellman B. Brown,
Gen' Supt., A. W. & B. R. R.
Anuapolis, Md.,
DEAR SIR :—Replying to your inquiry in regard to
the Severn river draw which this county put in about
ten years ago, would state that in order to test the con-
dition of the piles under the old draw that Mr. J. E.
Greiner, of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, fully exam-
ined and had one or two piles pulled up, found them all
right, so much so that he advised the construction of a
centre pin for draw, which was made, and since its com-
pletion has given entire satisfaction. Our bridge was
built in 1887, and the piles were not protected in any
way.
Yours truly,
W. H. BROWN.
BALTIMORE, MD., Feb. 10th, 1900.

DEAR SIR :—I have heard that during the discussion
relative to your bridge over the Severn river (now being
held in the Legislature of this State), that I at one time,
as president of the B. C. & A. Ry. Co., sent an engineer
down to investigate it. and that upon his report to the
effect that the bridge referred to was not in his opinion,
as strong as it should be, certain negotiations between
our respective companies were dropped. I take this oc-
casion to assure you that there is no truth whatever in
this report. It is entirely without foundation.
Very truly yours,
JOHN S. WILsON.
