On motion of Mr. Hanson, it was

Ordered, That a Select Committee of five members be
appointed by the Speaker, to whom shall be referred the
message of the Governor, for the purpose of distributing
various subjects treated therein to appropriate commit-
tees.

The Speaker then announced the following committee.
"Messrs. Hanson, Linthicum, Garner, Dudley and Finzell.

The Secretary appeared, and delivered the following
message:

BY THE SENATE,

January 3, 1900.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates,

We have received your message proposing that the
Senate shall meet the House of Delegates in the hall of
the House of Delegates, at 2. 30 P. M., o'clock, this '3rd
day of January, 1900, when the Speaker of the House of
Delegates shall preside, and in the presence of both
Houses open the returns of election for Governor of the
State of Maryland, in conformity with the requirements
of the Constitution, and we concur therein.

ALFRED RITTER,

Secretary.
Which was read.

JOINT CONVENTION.

The Senate appeared, accompanied by the committee
appointed by the House, and took the seats assigned
them.

The returns for the election of Governor were then
opened by the Speaker of the House of Delegates in the
presence of both Houses, in conformity with the pro-
visions of the Constitution, Article 2, section 3, and were
read by the Speaker.

It was found that Hon. John Walter Smith, had re-
ceived 128, 409 votes.

Hon. Lloyd Lowndes had received 116, 286 votes.
Hon. James Swann had received 5, 275 votes.
